The United States aircraft carriers are warships that envolved from balloon-carrying wooden vessels into nucleair-powerd vessels carrying many dozens of fixed- and rotary-wing aircrafts. Since their introduction they have been allowed naval forces to protect air-power great distances without having to depend on local bases for staging aircraft operations. So aircraft carriers act as sea going airbases for carrier-based aircrafts. In the United States Navy, these ships are designated with hull classification numbers to identify the ships. Aircraft Carriers intended to operate with the main fleet were numbered in the “CV” series, which was originated as part of the cruiser (“C”) group of designations. During and after World War II, ships in the CV series were frequently given modified designations, including CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVAN (nuclear-powered attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light/small aircraft carrier), CVN (nuclear-powered aircraft carrier), CVS (anti-submarine warfare support aircraft carrier) and CVT (training aircraft carrier). All of these expanded designations were numbered in the original CV series.
World War II also generated a separate number series for aircraft carriers that were intended for auxiliary purposes such as escorting convoys, transporting aircraft and other missions which did not require the high speed of the CV series ships. Originally called Aircraft Escort Vessels (AVG), then Auxiliary Aircraft Carriers (ACV), they were finally termed Escort Aircraft Carriers (CVE). During the mid-1950s, many CVEs were redesignated as Escort Helicopter Aircraft Carriers (CVHE) and Utility Aircraft Carriers (CVU). These retained their original CVE series numbers.

Escort Aircraft Carrier (CVE, ACV, AVG)
The escort carrier or escort aircraft carrier (US hull classification symbol CVE), also called a “jeep carrier” or “baby flattop” in the US Navy or “Woolworth Carrier” by the Royal Navy, was a small and slower type of aircraft carrier mainly used in World War II. They were typically half the length and a third the displacement of larger fleet carriers, more-lightly armed and armored, and carried fewer planes. Escort carriers were most often
built upon a commercial ship hull, so they were cheaper and could be built quickly. This was their principal advantage as they could be completed in
greater numbers as a stop-gap when fleet carriers were scarce. However, the lack of protection made escort carriers particularly vulnerable, and several were sunk with great loss of life. Escort carriers were too slow to keep up with the main forces consisting of fleet carriers, battleships, and cruisers. Instead, they were used to escort merchant ship convoys, defending them from enemy threats such as submarines and planes. In the invasions of mainland Europe and Pacific islands, escort carriers provided air support to ground forces during amphibious operations. Escort carriers also served as backup aircraft transports for fleet carriers, and ferried aircraft of all military services to points of delivery.
During the Second World War, 151 aircraft carriers were built, 122 were escort carriers. A number of these carriers were transferred to the Royal Navy (UK hull classification DB).
